Power comes from a transversely-mounted 3.3L straight-six with 233 Horsepower and 234 lb-ft of torque, a marked improvement over the 177 hp V6 from the original Freelander. Gear shifts come courtesy of a six-speed automatic, and comnined fuel economy is 25 mpg. In Europe, the Freelander 2 will also be available with a 4-cylinder turbodiesel developed out of the partnership between Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroen on diesel technologies. The oil-burner makes 160 horsepower, 295 lb-ft of torque, and gets a very healthy 37.7 mpg in combined use. In addition to the automatic, the diesel Freelander is available with a six-speed manual.
As you would expect, the LR2 shows its stuff off-road. A full-time 4×4 system continually adjusts the torque split depending on driving conditions (though most of it is sent to the front wheels for regular pavement work). It’s also equipped with Land Rover’s Terrain Response system, which manages the car’s Dynamic Stability Control, Electronic Traction Control, and Hill Descent control systems. Drivers use that system to select a terrain profile that best matches the driving conditions they’re in. The choices are General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud & Ruts, and Sand. A twist of a dial is all it takes to make the selection.
Finally, luxury and convenience features and options abound. A 12-speaker Dolby Pro Logic II audio system, touch-screen nav, parking assistance control, keyless entry and starting, and adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights are just a few.
The new LR2 is a handsome small utility vehicle that is as well-appointed as many premium sedans, and unlike much of its competition in the segment, it offers world-class off-road capabilities. Sure, most buyers will never bring it anywhere close to its limits in that sense, but the LR2 should be able to tackle the urban and suburban jungles of North America with aplomb.
